Why You Need To Be Fearful Of Fear

#1 In The "Hooked On A Feeling" Summer Series

Fear is a basic instinct but can end up being a default way of living life. I know this because I’ve spent a huge part of my life consumed by fear and anxiety. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—living in fear has been an absolutely HUGE waste of my time.

I do respect my body’s instinct for keeping me from harm and I want it to continue to protect me. It’s my mind’s definition and attachment to fear that I want changed. (It seems to have an overactive imagination that anything uncertain will kill me—what a drama queen!)

The Definition of Fear:

Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

What Is YOUR Purpose For Fear?

I think you will agree that the main purpose of fear is to protect you from harm or death. But the mind—while it wants to keep you safe and certain—also seeks variety. This is where things can get tricky.

Are You Hooked On A Feeling?

Or Just High On Believing...

Pixar’s movie, Inside Out, is all about understanding emotion and focuses on five key emotions. I know that you know there are way more than five emotions, but with less than two hours, I don’t think they had enough time to explore more than five.

One thing you may not know is that there are more negative emotions to experience than positive ones and the movie reflects that. The story features four negative emotions— fear, disgust, anger and sadness. Joy is the only positive emotion which is the main character’s lead feeling as a child.

Confessions Of A Cockroach

Have you ever taken one of those online personality tests? They’re the tests where you can find out what celebrity you’re like or what Star Wars character you are. Well, the test I took was “What kind of animal were you in a past life?”

I was expecting to get some sort of cute, fuzzy animal like a little bear or a puppy. But what I got wasn’t a cute, fuzzy little animal. Oh nooooo. It was an insect. And not just any insect—a super-grody, heebie jeebie cockroach!

Long after the bombs fall and you and your good deeds are gone, cockroaches will still be here prowling the streets like armored cars

I was stunned. How could this be? How could I be a cockroach? I wish I had kept the explanation from the test as I can’t find it online anymore, but basically it said that cockroaches are considered to be

ART BREAK: American Gothic

I’ve decided to periodically feature a few mini-posts to take a break and look at something different from the usual content. I’m starting with an “art break” since I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember.

I’m sure many of you are familiar with this famous Grant Wood painting. Most (more…)

Why Complaining Is The Gift You Don’t Want To Give

Did you know that complaining can be habitual? And that it can be an addiction? Some research shows that complaining can actually be bad for your health. Say what?

So why do we love to complain? Mostly I think it’s because complaining meets our needs on a basic level. If you took the Six Human Needs test, then you already know about certainty,

If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced

One thing that I’ve learned through life is that sometimes the things that we fear most or the things that people tell us we can’t do are the very things that we MUST do. This is why I love this quote by Vincent van Gogh and featured it in my post on doubt. (Plus, I love this painting and wanted to look at it again.)

Fanning The Flame Of The Internal Spark

Do you ever get an idea that creates energy inside of you which gives you a split-second impulse to act on the idea? If you don’t act right away, usually what follows is that little voice in your head that telling you all the reasons why you can’t do it. This is your lizard brain trying to protect you and keep you alive. If your impulse was to jump off a tall building into a baby pool, (more…)
